Health data should stay close to you
April 20, 2026
Steps, routes, and history are health data. They do not need to leave the phone for you to walk more evenly.
Step counts and walked streets say a lot about your day. That is why they belong on the phone, not on a distant server by default.
You do not need an account to start a walking habit. Motion & Fitness is only needed when you are ready for the phone to count.
Apple Health sync is optional. Turn it on if you want the step ring next to other records. Turn it off and the history still lives in the app.
If you join a friends' circle, only the ranking numbers are shared with people in that circle. Not the full GPS path.
Keeping data close does not replace the walk. It only removes one easy reason not to start.
