Pick a step goal that fits
March 9, 2026
A 2025 meta-analysis found about 7,000 steps a day linked with lower risk than a very low count. 10,000 is not the only useful number.
10,000 steps spread on social feeds because it is easy to remember, not because it is the only number that helps. Many studies see most of the gain before that mark.
A 2025 Lancet Public Health meta-analysis, compared with about 2,000 steps a day, found about 7,000 steps linked with lower all-cause mortality, and lower heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and depressive symptoms.
That is an association, not a promise. People who walk more often have other habits too. It is still enough reason to pick a number near your ordinary day, then raise it later.
Adults over 60 often see a clear benefit around 6,000 to 8,000 steps. Younger adults sometimes gain more up to about 8,000 to 10,000. Start near what you already walk.
A huge target on day one is easy to drop. The goal is there to keep a rhythm, not to punish you.
